Golf’s oldest Major Championship takes place at Royal Liverpool in Wirral this July. Regarded by many as the one to win, The Open Championship and it’s coveted Claret Jug has enjoyed a rich history with the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy all amongst past winners.

Whilst all eyes for The 2023 Open Championship, will be on Hoylake in July, qualifying for the tournament takes place well before that.

The Open Qualifying Series is a global adventure that takes in six countries across five continents over eight events with one goal: to qualify for the most prestigious golf championship in the world, The Open. Regional and Final Qualifying take place in The UK and allow both professionals and amateurs (with a handicap of 0.0 or lower) the chance to do battle and claim a place in the field at Hoylake.

The qualifying venues in the UK this year for Regional Qualifying are rated amongst the very best, offering a suitable challenge as the gateway to playing in the 151st Open Championship.

Taking place on Monday 26th June, players will be enjoying a simple 18-hole stroke play tournament. The top players will progress to final qualifying.

We’re going to take a look at each of the Regional Qualifying venues for The Open and our thoughts on the test that lies ahead.

Alwoodley Golf Club

Alwoodley Golf Club

PAR 72 | YARDAGE 6,739

The first course designed by famed architect Dr Alister Mackenzie and is now known as the Original MacKenzie Course.

Dating back to 1907 the course at Alwoodley enjoys natural heathland characteristics, with firm, springy fairways lined by heather and occasional outcrops of gorse. Distinguishing features are the eye-catching, irregularly shaped and naturalistic-looking bunkers as well as large, often undulating, greens.

Fancy playing Alwoodley yourself?

Caldy Golf Club

Caldy Golf Club

PAR 72 | YARDAGE 6,714

The course at Caldy, established in 1907 with a redesign by James Braid in 1930, provides an eclectic mix of cliff-top links, parkland and heathland, almost 3 courses in one.

Since those early days, the design has changed little fundamentally, but much investment has been made to transform Caldy into a genuine championship venue. The scenery and setting were undeniable, and with the addition of USGA standard tee boxes and a number of other developments, the course is now held in high regard by the tournament bodies.

County Louth Golf Club

County Louth Golf Club

PAR 72 | YARDAGE 7,031

County Louth Golf Club is often referred to as ‘Baltray’, the village in which it is located close to the historic town of Drogheda.

There are no weak holes around Baltray, with holes running in every direction, visiting golfers must tackle the wind from all angles. In 2009 the course hosted the Irish Open, which saw Shane Lowry capture his home open title as an amateur.

Dating back to 1892, the current championship links was designed in 1938 by the renowned Tom Simpson. The course is laid out in two nine-hole loops and covers almost 200 acres of links land. The golf course has become noted for excellent presentation standards and for the many unique greens complexes.

Ferndown Golf Club

Ferndown Golf Club

PAR 71 | YARDAGE 6,556

The Championship Course at Ferndown was founded in 1921, when the inaugurating fixture included the legendary Harry Vardon. The course however was conceived by Harold Hilton, the Hoylake member who twice became Open Champion as an amateur in the 1890s.

Ferndown’s Championship course was included in the 2002 publication of Golf Monthly’s top 100 British courses, and the heathland track is now a staple in a good Bournemouth golf tour.

Measuring in at over 7,000 yards, the course at Kedleston will provide a stern test for golfers trying to reach The 150th Open at St Andrews. Five time Open Champion James Braid is responsible for the design but the onset of the Second World War in 1939 meant it was left up to renowned course architects Colt, Alison and Morrison to finalise the plans for the course using Braid’s original design.

Kilmarnock (Brassie)

Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club

PAR 72 | YARDAGE 6,852

Designed by Theodore Moon, Barassie has an extensive history and has been offering golfers a magnificent links golf challenge since 1887.

The Avening and The Cherington courses will be used for The 150th Open Regional Qualifying event. Minchinhampton Golf Club has been a Regional Qualifying venue on several occasions, the last of which was in 2019 when The Open was at Royal Portrush.

Moor Park Golf Club

North Hants Golf Club

Northamptonshire County Golf Club

The course is a traditional heathland golf course with undulating woodland, gorse, heather and fine pine woods.

Panmure Golf Club

PAR 70 | YARDAGE 6,551

Situated between the courses of Monifieth and Carnoustie on the east coast of Scotland, this James Braid designed course is the 16th-oldest golf club in the world, dating back to 1845.

It was at Panmure Golf Club in 1953 that the legendary Ben Hogan made his rigorous preparations for victory at Carnoustie in his only Open Championship appearance, he was victorious by four shots & achieved a course record 68 in the final round.

This par-70 layout was laid out by five-time Open Champion James Braid and has hosted a wide variety of regional and national professional and amateur competitions.

The ultimate guide to golf breaks for beginners. If you have just taken up the game of golf, you’ll find some great tips and useful information on golf breaks & holidays that suit the novice golfer.

In 2017 there were 2.5 million British golfers, research led by The R&A together with England Golf, Golf Ireland, Scottish Golf and Wales Golf shows that 5.3 million adult golfers enjoyed playing golf in Great Britain and Ireland in 2021. There are a lot of golfers out there who are new to the game.

Contents

With golf seeing a boom in new players hitting the fairways, taking up the game as a casual hobby or looking to obtain a handicap and commit to being fully bitten by the golf bug. Golf is quickly becoming a sport more people are opening their minds to!

For many, there is a steep learning curve to go from first swing on a driving range to a day on the course, but for those who wish to enjoy a couple of days away playing golf, we here at Your Golf Travel are here to help exploring which golf breaks are the best for beginners and can enable you to learn the skills to start developing your game.

In this blog, we have looked at some of the very best golf breaks that suit new golfers, from those with 9-hole golf courses to others that set up perfectly to introduce yourself to the game of golf, with excellent practice areas, golf lessons, the best driving ranges, enjoyable and friendly courses, and welcoming clubhouses and hotels.

What is a Golf Break?

A golf break is a holiday where you combine playing at a golf course, as well as staying away from home to enjoy a night or two in a hotel while also making use of restaurants, bars, and leisure facilities to suit your every need.

A golf break is a great way to enjoy the game of golf and to learn more about it. Golf resorts have excellent practice facilities and often offer cheap golf lessons, so they are a perfect place for players who wish to improve their game, as well as those who like to make the most of their time on the golf course just as much as they look forward to relaxing during their time away from the fairways.

Types of Golf Breaks

So, you’ve just started to take up golf as a hobby. You’re dabbling in the game, hitting the ball around on the practice tee, and you’re starting to feel pretty good about it. So you decide to take your first golf break. You’re excited, and you’re sure you’re going to play like Tiger Woods, but you’re not. Why? Because you’ve only had about 10 hours of practice. Why does this matter? Because you need more time on the course. But before getting out on the course for the first time, you should know about the different types of golf breaks available.

Typically there are two different types of golf breaks available for beginners, the first being one that is played around a shorter golf course or one that has a 9-hole course attached to the main 18-hole golf course that might be better suited for more experienced players.

Another popular type of golf break for beginner golfers includes tuition as part of the package, which enables you to learn golf tips from a qualified golf professional.

Golf lessons will give you the opportunity to learn the basic golf skills you need to eventually enjoy a full 18-hole round of golf, and perhaps set your new best score ever. Of course, all of the action on the golf course will be made all the more enjoyable when you use your time away from the golf course to make use of the facilities of the golf resort which may include thermal spas, sport and leisure facilities and even local attractions should you wish to explore new places.

Once you have learned the golf skills required to improve your game, you’ll be ready to play on some of the best golf courses in the world, which luckily for us all, are ready and waiting to welcome you onto the first tee.

How to Book a Golf Break

Decide where to go on a golf holiday

This is, for obvious reasons, the biggest decision you’ll make throughout the whole process, but don’t let that put you off. While it’s easiest to just blindly choose one of the most popular destinations, sometimes that won’t meet your criteria, whatever that might be.

So, here are things to consider when choosing where to go on a golf holiday:

How much will a golf holiday cost?

Your destination will largely be determined by your budget, so it’s the best place to start. Of course, you are able to get bargains in every corner of the globe, but let us give you some guidelines…

UK Golf Breaks
Golf Breaks in the UK

As you might have guessed, staying closer to home is the cheapest option when it comes to booking a golf break, largely due to the reduced travel costs.

The beauty about playing golf in the UK is the variety, in both style and price point, allowing you to have full control.

Some packages can see you spend a weekend at a golf resort, playing two rounds of golf and only spending £60. However, as with anything, if you want to experience the best, you’ll have to pay; Trump Turnberry, Gleneagles and the Old Course at St Andrews are examples of the upper echelon of UK golf.

If you’re wanting to keep to a strict budget, check out our Best Golf Breaks under £100.

Golf Holidays in Europe
Golf Holidays in Europe

With the risk of listing out every European golf holiday in this paragraph, let’s keep it to the most popular destination, of which the choice is varied.

One thing that is constant though is the value for money; play at Ryder Cup courses like Le Golf National, head to the best the Algarve has to offer or experience five-star luxury in southern Spain – all for under £300.

If you’re after a longer stay, rounds at more premium golf courses or the choice of all-inclusive golf holidays then these too are available for as cheap as £500 in destinations like Turkey and Morocco.

For some inspiration, take a look at our list of the Best Courses in the Costa Del Sol.

Going Long Haul

America has regions like Florida and South Carolina which are populated with some of the most famous courses in the world, South Africa boasts venues like Pinnacle Point and Fancourt and then the Caribbean offers all-inclusive luxury in destinations like the Dominican Republic and Barbados.

The added bonus of our long haul golf holidays is that many of them come with flights, leaving you with nothing else to focus on than your golf.

Decide when to go on a golf holiday

With price out the way, now you should think about when you want to travel, because contributing factors like the weather, how busy the courses are and availability all change depending on your travel dates.

The rule of thumb is usually that travelling during peak season you’ll experience the resorts at their very best, but pay a premium, while off-season will see you pay less but might not get the high temperatures of the summer months.

Destinations like the Algarve and Andalucia benefit from nearly 300 days of sunshine per year, which makes it easier to choose your travel dates, while the unpredictability of the UK climate leaves many playing a guessing game outside of June, July and August.

Decide how long to go for

The final consideration for your destination choice are the flight times. This may not seem the be all and end all of your holiday, but if you have a 10-hour flight each way for a four-day trip, you have to ask is it really worth it?

Of course, if you are flying, the best times are to arrive early morning and leave in the evening, giving your arrival and departure days enough time for golf, but with budget and practicality in mind, you may have to compromise.

My suggestion is that if you’re on a long distance flight, you stay for a longer period of time so you don’t feel like the majority of your getaway was spent on a plane and if it’s a shorter journey, get out there as early as possible and book a late flight home.

Decide how to travel to your destination

Once you’ve chosen where you’re going, you need a means of travel.

If you’re set on a flight inclusive package, then your mind is made up for you, much like a trip to many overseas destinations…but not all of them.

The exception to the rule is France, where many of our deals to magnificent venues like Le Touquet Golf and Golf D’Hardelot include Eurotunnel travel; taking just under 40 minutes to cross the channel, this is an extremely affordable, convenient and popular way to experience some of Europe’s top courses.

In the UK, you have more options but really are you going to travel on a train with your golf gear? We suggest driving yourself in the UK if a short to medium length journey, but if its a Southampton to Newcastle round trip, perhaps a domestic flight would be best.

Decide what accommodation options you would prefer

With the golf the top priority on golf holidays, and rightly so, it’s easy to neglect the importance of clean, practical and suitable accommodation.

For instance, it’s unlikely you’ll decide you want to stay in a hotel and then see which golf courses surround it, but instead the other way round.

That said, if you’re travelling in a large group, you may be more comfortable in a self-catering apartment or villa than in an all-inclusive hotel? Destinations like Pestana Carvoeiro offer brilliant self-catering villas at outrageously good prices, while El Rompido has an amazing five-star hotel with everything on site; choose wisely.

Do you want to take your own clubs?

If you’ve ever learnt to drive, you’ll remember the transition from your instructor’s car to your own. Despite passing, your car feels unfamiliar and perhaps you might stall it once or twice in the first couple of weeks, which is normal.

That’s the same concept as using someone else’s or hiring clubs on a golf holiday, that stall could be a shank, and worse still it could be on the first tee. While it can sometimes be cheaper to hire clubs, taking your own is our advice, especially if you’re having a wager with your mates.

Book a long-haul golf holiday with us and our preferred partner, British Airways, and get free club carriage when you fly.

How to get to the golf courses?

You’ve finally landed at your destination, your luggage was collected without any hassle and you’re now ready for your golf holiday.

But how will you get to your hotel?

This is another 50:50 decision for you to make and one that, once again, will probably depend on a few things.

How many golfers are there?

How many courses are you playing?

How far away is the airport?

Are you comfortable driving in that country?

Decide on after-golf activities or outings

Unless you choose one of our unlimited golf packages, you will come across free time on your trip, some of which is probably unaccounted for.

Many of you will hit the beach or sunbathe by the pool, but most golfing regions offer much more away from the fairways.

When planning activities, be conscious of your group and understand that not every activity will be a crowd pleaser, especially if the ages of golfers vary.

In the evening, perhaps go for dinner and then drinks, so if anyone wants to tail off and be fresh for the morning tee time, they can.

Lastly, weigh up if you actually need to go seeking bars and activities; golf resorts around the world are becoming so advanced and are more like little villages, especially those in Turkey.

Our Golf Travel Experts can help with all of the above so just give them a call.

Mallorca

Our Social Media Content Creator recently ventured on a trip to the scenic golf island of Majorca. While out there he managed to play the spectacular golf courses, sample the great nightlife and enjoy the tasty food on offer.

Below is his guide and top tips for golf holidays in Majorca.

Spectacular Golf

The island of Majorca is home to some of the best golf courses in Spain, as well as a few hidden gems that will leave you in awe.

Son Muntaner, the host of the recent Majorca Open, is everything you would want from a DP World Tour venue. A great course for golfers of all standards with a wide range of tees! The course offers some incredible views as it sweeps through the undulating hills in the outskirts of Palma.

As one of the most recognisable golf courses in Spain, Alcanada is another YGT favourite when talking about the great courses in Majorca. Designed by golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, Alcanada is a must for all golfers when visiting Majorca.

We asked our Twitter followers what they think the best golf course in Majorca is, it turns out their favourite is Alcanada.

Son Vida is the oldest course on the island, so it’s the perfect choice if you’re looking for a quirky, fun course to play. On most holes, irons and good course management are needed, so use the yardage book wisely to plot your route around the course.

Lively Nightlife

There is a vast choice of restaurants and bars in most towns, with a vibrant nightlife. The Sky Bar at Bar Cuba, Palma offers spectacular views of the bay with an amazing selection of drinks that visitors can enjoy late into the night.

This makes it very easy to stay up until the early hours of the morning in Majorca (Don’t miss your tee-time!)

Tasty Food

If you’re interested in trying out the local cuisine, there’s a fabulous selection of seafood restaurants to choose from!

An absolute must visit for golfers travelling here is the La Terraza Restaurant in Alcudia. Enjoy fresh produce with local charm and a selection of quality wines for a truly unforgettable experience.

The seafood paella is a real highlight. For those who miss English food from back home, there are still plenty of options to choose from.

Gorgeous Weather

With 300 days of sunshine a year, Majorca is a no-brainer if you’re looking to chase the sun! Winter golf or summer golf, any time of the year is a great time to enjoy those sun-kissed fairways!

Winter: 12-16°C

Activities away from the course

There’s plenty to do off the course as well: if you’re feeling really adventurous, take a boat to one the semi-deserted bays on the north island and swim in the clear water. A day cruise in Majorca along the north coast is one we would highly recommend. As it less crowded than the rest of the island and offers spectacular cliffs of over 180 meters in height.

Nothing quite captivates the nation like a major football tournament, whether it’s the back-window car flags, St George’s Cross face paint or drunken renditions of our national anthem; everybody seems to get involved.

So this year, we thought we would join in and combine the excitement with a chance to get a free golf holiday…

To celebrate this year’s event, we are running a promotion which will send golfers on FREE GOLF HOLIDAYS. In short, if you book a golf holiday to any destination before the tournament begins, and the country of your destination is victorious, everyone who has booked to that country will get their money back in future credit.

For tips on how to give yourself the best chance of winning a free golf holiday, stick around and read on.

About the World Cup

I’m sure there are plenty of football fans reading this who don’t need to know how the World Cup works, if you are one of these people, click here. If not, take a look at this very brief summary of the tournament and then you’ll be good to crack on with some winning tips.

Where is the World Cup?

The World Cup is being hosted by Qatar for the first time in the tournament’s history.

When is the World Cup?

The World Cup kicks off on November 20th 2022

How does the World Cup work?

The World Cup is a relatively simple format but can be made complicated the more you delve into it, especially when you start predicting potential routes to the final.

However, with a free golf holiday at stake, why wouldn’t you pull out all the stops to make sure you give yourself the best possible chance?

  • The tournament will start with the 32 countries, split into eight groups of four.
  • Each country will play the other three in their group once.
  • Once that’s done with, the top two teams from each group will progress.
  • Then there are three rounds of knockout stages before the final

So that, in a nutshell, is what to expect over the next few weeks and now you know what’s happening, use it to help you win a golf holiday for nothing!

How to choose your next Golf Holiday destination

Many people will tell you who to back for the World Cup – you’ll have your patriotic neighbour convinced that football is finally coming home, the purist who backs Spain to pass their way to glory and the fantasist who reckons the USA can shock the world and make history.

Our advice, don’t listen to them…instead, take ours!

Here are some excellent ways to make an educated decision on who to back for the World Cup, including some inspiration from some of the world’s best golfing destinations.

Look at the odds

As a golfer, this promotion is all about finding the balance between who you believe will win the World Cup and deciding where you actually want to book a golf holiday to.

So first things first, take a look at the odds; who are the favourites? who are outsiders? Use the bookies knowledge as a foundation to build yours and it will help narrow down your options.

By all means you can back Qatar, but 1000/1 tells you all you need to know as to their chances…

Route to glory

With a bit of research and some basic predictions, you can map out any one team’s route to World Cup glory. I mentioned earlier how two teams advance from each group, but what I didn’t mention is how the winner of each group will face the runner-up of another.

For example:

Group H consists of Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay and Korea Republic. It is highly expected that Portugal will progress from this group. However, the runner-up in this group will face the winner of Group G, which could well be Brazil, something to think about if things don’t go Portugal’s way.

Where to go on a golf holiday?

At this stage I’d expect you maybe have a handful of countries you believe will make the latter stages of the tournament and the only way to split them is to now consider their golfing pedigree.

I’m going to take a guess and say you have the following countries in mind:

World Cup Flags of Spain, England, France & Portugal

So, let’s take a look at my featured venue from each of these countries and hopefully you will have a better idea of where you want to go after some inspiration.

Will Spain be victorious?

A good choice and a country that will no doubt be in consideration by all golfers taking part in our promotion; Spain won the World Cup in 2010 and more importantly, is home to some of Europe’s greatest golf courses.

Other than PGA Catalunya and a select few more, the majority of Spain’s golfing catalogue resides in Andalucia, a southern region which is littered with championship golf courses and resorts.

A featured course for Spain is La Reserva, a beautiful parkland layout set in the renowned Sotogrande region of Andalucia. Since opening in 2003 La Reserva has catapulted itself to the top of Spain’s best golf courses with stunning open fairways, immaculate, complicated greens and awesome views of the bordering Mediterranean Sea and Sotogrande mountains.

The course is neighbours with the renowned Valderrama which hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup and is an annual stop on the European Tour. However despite the immense championship pedigree of Valderrama, La Reserva definitely gives it a run for its money and will no doubt feature with a tour event soon.

Although don’t feel you have to choose between these two magnificent golf courses, we have some brilliant packages which see you taking to the fairways of both and experiencing the best of golf in Spain. If you want to get a feel for what La Reserva is like, check out this clip from our #Greatest18 Tour of Andalucia:

Think England will win?

England certainly aren’t favourites to lift the World Cup but as a country we have to have hope; this year with a young, fearless squad, who knows how far we can go?

The great thing about booking a golf break in England for this mega promotion is that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to play some incredible courses, which would certainly soften the blow of an early exit.

One course which epitomises the standard of golf England can offer, as well as being affordable is The Belfry.

With The Brabazon Course attracting golf fans from around the world, the PGA National & Derby Course complementing it perfectly as well as resort accommodation and facilities of the highest standard, The Belfry is without doubt one of the best UK Golf Breaks you can go on.

The Brabazon Course is the main attraction having hosted four Ryder Cups and featuring several iconic holes, none more than the 10th (above) – a driveable par-4 which was made famous by legend Seve Ballesteros in the 1997 Ryder Cup. Your round on The Brabazon will end on the famous 18th as you play up towards the incredible hotel, but just make sure you hit the right green….

Can France claim a third title?

France were runners up in the Euro Championships in 2016 and won the World Cup two years later – they’re devastating attacking frontline justifies their place at the top of the odds tables.

Northern France is packed with charming towns where brilliant resorts and courses reside, but you’d be hard pushed to find a better package than this one…

Travelling by Eurotunnel, you’ll head to the famous Le Manoir Hotel where you’ll stay for two nights before taking on three rounds of golf at the brilliant Golf D’Hardelot & Le Touquet Golf.

Le Manoir is simply perfect for travelling golfers, offering traditional accommodation, fantastic facilities and just a short journey to the two venues. Golf D’Hardelot boasts Les Pins and Les Dunes, two vastly different but equally as beautiful courses while Le Touquet’s La Mer Course offers a brilliant links test and has previously hosted the French Open (six times).

Back France for the World Cup and even if they don’t make it, you’ll just be happy you have committed to what is an unbelievable golfing experience.

Can Portugal finally get a World Cup win?

After winning the Euro’s ahead of France in 2016, Portugal go into the World Cup with confidence and with Cristiano Ronaldo in the team, anything is possible.

The Algarve is potentially the most renowned golfing region in Europe, home to so many championship courses, purpose built resorts and a bustling nightlife. Vale Do Lobo‘s par-3 16th on the Royal Course has become the unofficial adopted face of the region.

The exceptional 200+ yard par-3 is a breathtaking hole, neighbouring the southern coastline of Portugal and can give you some wobbly knees on the first tee. However it would be an injustice to simply talk about one hole on a single course at Vale Do Lobo.

In addition to the dramatic Royal Course, the Ocean Course is another memorable test again playing right up to the shoreline while the hotel has everything a visiting golfer could wish for including 15 restaurants.

Just 20 minutes from Faro Airport and close to the bustling nightlife of Villamoura, Vale Do Lobo is a great choice to visit year after year so who knows your next golf holiday there might just be FREE.

Who are you backing?

So hopefully by now you have a better idea of who to back for World Cup glory and where you’re going to book your golf holiday. Don’t forget to read our terms and conditions and browse our region pages for even more venues which you can be visiting for free.

Keep up to tabs on more featured offers on our social media channels and if you want to make a booking then simply call 0800 043 6644 or enquire online.

The Masters, a tournament so special for some golfers they’ll put their entire life on hold for 4 days (Mr / Mrs Masters). Whether you find yourself consuming every blade of grass at Augusta National on google earth (Golf Geek) or you simply won’t watch it because Tiger’s not playing / competing, this event each April brings out the very best in golf, providing you can watch it (The Closet Golfer) or understand it (Golfing Know-it-none).

First off, we head to the golfer we all know…

The Golf Geek

Has The Masters playing on the TV, Sky Sports on an iPad, connected to every social network and all they can muster for the weeks of The Masters is “hashtag Masters”

Golf Geek

Most likely to –
Send more tweets than the winner will have shots

Least likely to –
Miss a shot

The Closet Golfer

Walking into the office this guy thinks he’s cool, “golf, that’s so boring” “The Masters, what’s that?” – this is all a facade, inside he or she absolutely loves the game. They spend the entire tournament refreshing updates on their phone with the veracity of a teenager who has just got Tinder, too scared that someone will find out the truth. THEY. LIKE. GOLF.

Closet Golfer

Most likely to –
Be seeking wifi everywhere having exceeded their data allowance on The Masters website, Sky Sports, Twitter and every other available source of Masters info.

Least likely to –
Ask their other half if they can watch The Masters on TV.

Golfing Know-It-None

Expect questions out of the blue…
”how many birdies make up a par”
“why did they miss that putt”
“I could’ve done that better”

This person has a love of golf but doesn’t necessarily have their eye on the ball when it comes to detail.

Golfing Know it None

Most likely to –
Expect Tiger to win every hole, every round and every Masters, forever

Least likely to –
Know who Jack Nicklaus is

The Sunday Sleeper

Perhaps our most unlucky golfer. Having lived and breathed every shot in the tournament, plus the par-3, plus every Masters rerun since the previous tournament, they fall at the final hurdle…Amen Corner is their sleeping pill with drowsy eyes taking their toll.

Sunday Sleeper

Most likely to –
Wake up at for the presentation in the Butler Cabin

Least likely to –
Have any comprehension about how the winner got into the Cabin

Tiger’s Number 1 Fan

Spieth, McIlroy, Day, they’re not as good as Tiger Eldrick Woods.

Why?
Because.

This rich and compelling argument leaves you with at least one positive…there’s more golf for the rest of us.

Tiger's Number 1 Fan

Most likely to –
Wear Red every Sunday

Least likely to –
Wear anything other than Nike

The Sunday Specialist

Turning on the TV exactly as the leaders hit their approaches into the 11th hole at Augusta National on Sunday. This person is driven by efficiency and precision, their efforts to absorb all that The Masters has to offer them in the next few hours puts them in the driving seat for golf based conversation on Monday morning.

Sunday Specialist

Most likely to –
Know the yardage and stroke indexes of the back nine at Augusta

Least likely to –
Know anything about the front nine…”I thought it was just a nine-holer”

Mr / Mrs Masters

They’re in the zone. 4 days of Augusta National Golf Club at The Masters. Their only contact with the outside world is with a delivery driver who will probably be bringing them Masters essentials like Pimento Cheese sandwiches. They’re never more than 1 metre from a golf club, they own Masters merchandise which they wear religiously for the tournament, cracking out a new Polo shirt for Sunday so they watch their best.

Mr Mrs Masters

Most likely to –
Have a Masters tattoo. Own a Green Jacket. Be applying, on a daily basis, for membership to Augusta National.

Least likely to –
Have an interest in any other golf tournament.

Any of these describe you and your Masters experience? Share it with them.

Whichever golfer you are, be sure to check out Your Golf Travel for incredible Masters packages and tickets.

]]>

We golfers use a set of alien terms and words that are not often heard in normal conversation. We all think we know what all the golfing jargon means but in truth defining golf terms and phrases has its fair share of grey areas. Here is Your Golf Travel’s light-hearted look at the A to Z of golf.

A – All Square

A term used in matchplay to indicate that both players or pairs have cheated on exactly the same number of holes.

B – Bogey

A bogey is a term used to describe the score an individual makes on a hole if (when) they shoot 1-over the ‘par’. A par is the number of shots the course has set for that hole. Similarly, a Birdie is if a person can actually play golf and shoots 1-under.

C – Cup

The metal or plastic cylinder fitted into the hole in the green. Strictly speaking, it is only the liner of the hole, but in regular golf usage players will often say “cup” when they mean “hole,” just as they frequently will say “just in bounds” when they mean “out of bounds,” “Oh, here it is” when they mean “I can’t find it” and “five” when they mean “seven.”

D – Driving Range

The place golfers go to practice shots that they can’t replicate on the course.

Top Golf Dubai

E – Eagle

An unusually low score on a hole achieved by a golfer who shoots 2-under par, with an Albatross being 3-under par. Another description is a golfer who has hit two or three exceptionally lucky shots in a row, or a golfer with a poor memory and / or a creative pencil.

F – First Tee

The scariest part of any golf course. For its effects on the average golfers see “hook”, “shank”, “top” and “whiff”.

G – Golf

The derivation of the word “golf ‘from its Celtic and Middle English roots is obscure. Some possibilities are: gil f f (an incurable madness), gylf (a notorious liar), gullf (to beat a shrub with a short stick), golve (under; beneath; lost; blocked; submerged; stuck; obstructed), gellvo (horribly; terribly; hopelessly; awfully), galfa (my God!; oh, no!), goal fyl (to cry; to weep) and gael f (I quit).

H – Hook

A poorly hit shot that veers violently to the left, the exact opposite of a slice. Golfers that hit hooks may want to consider changing their grip, stance or swing while golfers that hit both hooks and slices may want to consider changing the way they spend their weekends. It is also worth noting that chronic hookers will hit perfectly straight shots as soon as they aim right to compensate for their ball flight.

I – Irons

1. Penology. Variously shaped pieces of metal by the use of which individuals are subjected to torment.

2. Golf. Variously shaped pieces of metal by the use of which individuals are subjected to torment.

J – Jigger

1. Traditional pitching iron used to get out of trouble on holes 1 through 18.

2. Traditional short measuring glass used to get into trouble at the 19th.

The Jigger Inn at The Old Course Hotel

K – Keeping Score

In theory, golfers assign a number exactly one higher than the previous one for each shot they play to arrive at the cumulative total of all the strokes required to complete a given hole. In rlity, creative counting is often employed to achieve more favourable results. Common score counting methods include -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on as well as the trusty 1,2,2,3,3,3,4,4,4,4…

L – Local Rules

A set of regulations that are ignored only by players on one specific course, rather than by golfers as a whole.

M – Mulligan

A mulligan simply means to re-take a shot and the first shot won’t be counted. Although not legal in the Rules Of Golf, many golfers allow mulligans in friendly games, so don’t worry, just drop a new ball where you hit the dodgy shot from and try again.

N – Nineteenth Hole

Most golfers’ favourite hole on the course and the place where golfers always find good lies.

O – Overclubbing

When a player hits an acceptable or good shot with the wrong club, resulting in the ball flying long of the intended target. Due to delusions of grandeur most amateur golfers need not worry about this as club selection is usually based on what Tiger Woods would hit rather than on your own abilities. However should a player suffer from overclubbing, it can be compensated for with overlooking and undercounting!

P – Play it as it lies

One of the two fundamental dictates of golf. The other one is “Wear It if It Clashes.”

Play it as it lies - Golf Terms

Q – Quick

The pace at which the majority of golfers play. This is either due to a distinct lack of ability or a misguided belief that any day now they will make their debut on the PGA Tour, thus forcing them to consider each and every shot as if they are coming down the stretch in the lead on the final day of the Masters.

R – Recovery Shot

The shot hit by most amateurs immediately following a shot hit with a driver or long iron. The recovery shot’s primary purpose is to get the ball out of a hazard or away from an obstacle and back into playable position on the fairway.

S – Shank

The most dramatic and unsettling form of misplayed shot. The ball is hit with the part of the club where the shaft and clubhead meet, resulting in a shot that flies off to the right at nearly a 90° angle while embarrassing the golfer and endangering his or her fellow players. Consistent shankers of the ball may turn to publications such as “Shanks-No Thanks” by R. K. Hoffman while Your Golf Travel would more readily recommend M. S. Howard’s “Tennis for Beginners”.

T – Top

Involves hitting the top of the golf ball with the sole of the club. Topped shots pop up in the air, are loaded with top spin and when hit really well, travel in excess of 6-7 yards. Topped shots are more commonly associated with beginners and die hard weekend warriors. This shot is rarely seen again after hackers have mastered the hook, slice, shank and the airshot. Additionally, players who top a shot are guaranteed to be told that their “head cam up” by an unqualified playing partner.

U – Up & Down

Holing out from off the green in two strokes; usually a greenside chip followed by a single putt. While up and downs are not alien to amateur golf it is more likely to see the “up, across, just short, 10 feet past, 6 inches short and down.”

V – Vast

The potential are into which a golf ball can travel in comparison with the size of the hole we are all aiming for. Most amateur golfers show a keen sense of adventure by exploring the vastness of the golf course before heading to the green.

W – Whiff

When a player completely misses the ball. Known among many weekend warriors as the practice swing.

X – X

What golfers write on their scorecard once they have given up on the hole. This is commonly replaced with “oh just put me down for a 6.”

Y – Yips

A psychological affliction that prevents you from holing putts of any description under pressure. The harder you try to fix this problem, the worse it will become.

Z – Zone (in the)

A place in a golfer’s mind where, should it be found, 300 yard drives, miraculous flop shots and holed 30 foot putts become as easy as breathing. The amount of time spent in the zone is directly related to the amount of talent possessed by the golfer in question and the amount of time spent on the practice range. In other words, very few golfers ever pay the zone a visit.

The 150th Open Championship
St Andrews Old Course

Sunday 10 July – Sunday 17 July 2022

Golf’s oldest Major Championship is regarded by many as the most prized title to claim. Since starting in 1860, The Open has been played at 14 different courses ranging from Prince’s in Kent, which has held The Open just once, in 1932, to The Old Course at St Andrews which has held a record 29 championships since it’s first in 1873.

The championship differs from the other 3 Major Championships in that it has always been contested over links golf courses. These fast running layouts can provide huge drama with the requirement for shot making imperative to navigate across the humps, hollows and pot bunkers which line the playing surfaces. The additional factor, which has been associated with many Open Championships, is the Great British weather. Whether this is the incredible events which took place during The Duel in Sun at Turnberry with stunning weather and unforgettable golf by Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, or it is the strong winds and rain that tested the world’s best against the likes of Royal Birkdale or Muirfield.

With some of the best ever players amongst those who have claimed The Claret Jug, The Open is a tournament woven into the game’s rich tapestry. Whether it is Harry Vardon, the man who made the overlap grip so popular it carries his name, with his record 6 victories or the scenes at Royal Birkdale in 1976 which launched the great Seve Ballesteros to the forefront of world golf, there are so many memories and shots that have contributed so greatly to the game’s history. Famous golfers who have claimed the title include record Major winner, Jack Nicklaus who not only achieved 3 victories but also a record 7 runners-up spots, or Bobby Jones who in claiming his 3rd Open in 1930 was able to complete the Grand Slam of both Amateur and Open Championship in Great Britain as well as victories in The US Open and US Amateur, this feat has never been matched.

The Open Championship and The Old Course are two of the capstones of golf. With increasing regularity, The Old Course plays host to The Open Championship and on each occasion, it brings drama, memorable moments and a stellar Champion Golfer of the Year.

About St Andrews

With many shots that are totally unique to the game of golf, The Old Course stands alone as a place every golfer should head to at least once in their lifetime.

Whether this is standing on the 1st tee, looking at one of the widest fairways in golf or the testing tee shot on The Road Hole (17th) and the unforgettable approach to trying to avoid golf’s most famous bunker with the pot bunker that protects the green.

St Andrews Old Course

Whatever your level of interest in the game of golf, a visit to St Andrews and playing The Old Course is a trip that everyone should endeavour to do, the memories will last long into your lifetime.

Past Open Championships at St Andrews

The Old Course at St Andrews has held The Open more times than any other course on The Open rota, the 150th Open Championship will be the 30th time the event has been held on the Old Course.

In recent times, The Old Course has seen USA’s Zach Johnson (2015) and South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen (2010) claim the title. With Tiger Woods achieving a double of Open Championship wins in 2005 and 2000 with record scores of -18 and -19 respectively.

Past greats who have triumphed on The Old Course to win an Open Championship include J.H. Taylor, winner of 2 Opens at St Andrews and 5 in total, James Braid, who won 2 of his 5 Open Championships at St Andrews. Bobby Jones, the only amateur to win an Open Championship at St Andrews, Jack Nicklaus, who claimed 2 Opens at St Andrews to go with his record 18-major haul. Seve Ballesteros whose celebration and fist pump in 1984 on the 18th hole at St Andrews is one of the iconic moments in golf. Sir Nick Faldo set the lowest Open Championship winning score with his victory in 1990.

The Open Championship at St Andrews will be one of the most anticipated and highly attended in many years with golfers from around the world descending on The Home of Golf to capture the magical moments that The Old Course provides each time it plays host to golf’s oldest Major Championship.

Nothing completes a round of golf like enjoying a cool beverage as the sun’s final rays disappear over the horizon. We’ve pulled together some snaps of the most spectacular sunsets in golf.

We’d love to hear about your own favourite spots. Send them to us via Twitter or Instagram using #YGTsunsets.

Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club

Mauritius

Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club, Mauritius

One of the most spectacular golf courses in Mauritius, the 18-Hole Championship Le Touessrok Golf Course is across the water from the resort mainland on its own beautiful island.

Rated among Golf World Magazine’s Top 10 Golf Courses in the World, Le Touessrok takes golfers on an exotic tropical trip through lush mangrove forests, past shimmering tidal pools and over rugged volcanic lava outcrops, skirting white sandy beaches on several occasions along the way.

Alcaidesa Links

Spain

Alcaidesa Links

One of Costa del Sol’s most popular courses, Alcaidesa Links overlooks magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Rock of Gibraltar and the North-African mountain range, offering golfers a unique sensory experience.

As the only links course available on the southern coast of Spain, Alcaidesa consists of wide fairways with heather and gorse, rolling hillsides sloping gently to the sea and ending in a stunningly beautiful beach.

Cascata Golf Club

Nevada – USA

Cascata Golf Club

Cascata derives its name from the Italian word for “waterfall,” which is appropriate because a 418-foot cascading waterfall is the predominant feature of the course.

A magnificent championship course set among dramatic scenery and a backdrop that includes the 3600-foot peak of Red Mountain; Cascata is a wonderful world of luxuriant fairways, sparkling lakes, and crystal streams.

Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club

Dubai

Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club

Voted as one of Gold World’s Top 100 Golf Courses in the World, Dubai Creek is the embodiment of a golfer’s paradise. It makes the most of its idyllic location with an undulating terrain that hugs the Dubai Creek in the heart of the city.

The iconic clubhouse provides a stunning backdrop to a spectacular and refreshingly unique golfing experience.

Foothills Golf Club

Arizona, USA

Foothills Golf Club

Nestled along the edge of the South Mountain, Foothills Golf Club provides a scenic desert golfing experience. An imaginative links layout set on rugged desert terrain, the roughness and rockiness of Foothills is contrasted by lush, rolling fairways and sparkling blue lakes.

A challenging round of golf is perfectly complemented by postcard-quality backdrops provided by the surrounding mountains.

Costa Navarino Golf Resort

Greece

The Bay Course - Costa Navarino

The impressive seaside Dunes Course, designed by Bernhard Langer, is Greece’s first signature golf course. Featuring spectacular views of the Ionian Sea, the course incorporates some links-style features, with parts venturing into olive and fruit groves and tall dunes dividing some of the halls adjacent to the golden beach.

Just a stones throw away from Navarino Dunes at the Navarino Bay development lies the Bay course which offers a different, but equally enjoyable, test to the Dunes course.

Oitavos Dunes

Portugal

Oitavos Dunes

Hailed by Golf Magazine as the No.1 course in Portugal, Oitavos Dunes is regarded as one of the leading natural links courses in the world. Its sand dunes and oceanic landscape make you feel like you’ve been teleported straight to a course in Scotland.

A four-time host of the Portuguese Open, Oitavos Dunes perfectly utilises the rich tapestries of the area, with wondrous views of the Atlantic Ocean and a stunning backdrop of the Sintra Mountains.

Pelican Hill

California, USA

Pelican Hill

Although Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines may regularly scoop top honours as the best of California’s world-class coastal golf courses, Pelican Hill is right up there with them.

Located on the famous Newport Coast, the North Course is a masterpiece that reflects the classic Scottish links style, meandering along an elevated plateau which offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The retention of the indigenous landscape makes this as scenic a golf course as they come, and one hell of a place to catch a sunset.

Trump Turnberry Resort

Scotland

Welcome to the Entertainment capital of the world!

This guide will give an insight into a golfing holiday in Las Vegas, known as the entertainment capital of the world and the most famous strip consisting of hotels, casinos, nightclubs, restaurants and shopping malls.

Need to know’s?

Local temperature
Highs of 40°C in July and August, and lows of 15°C in December, January. Either way whatever the month it’ll be hard for golfers not to be venturing out in shorts and polo shirt.
Flight Time
10 Hours 40 minutes from London Heathrow.
Location
Las Vegas is in Nevada and neighbours California, Utah and Arizona.
Airport
Las Vegas McCarran International Airport is between a 10-20 minute drive from the strip depending on where you are staying and a $15 for airport taxi fare.

Resident PGA and LPGA Players:

Not a huge surprise that some fantastic players on the professional tours have made Las Vegas their home. It might have more to do with the great weather and accessibility than what is on offer off the course. The likes of Nick Watney ($29.2M in winnings), Kevin Na ($37.5M in winnings), Scott Piercy (won over $22,000,000 and was actually born in Las Vegas), Ryan Moore (over $32M) Charley Hoffman ($32M in earnings) and from the LPGA Danielle Kang (6 pro wins on the LPGA).

Many great coaches also reside in Las Vegas with Butch Harmon having one of his golf academies here and Joseph Mayo teaching out of TPC Summerlin.

Where to Stay?

Vegas is known for its 5-star luxury hotels and casinos, located right on the strip…..

The Bellagio

Come and the see the epic ‘O’ Water show only at The Bellagio

Did you know?
Want to control the fountains which are so iconic to The Bellagio? Well, you could obviously buy the hotel…or you could become a Pearl Member of their rewards club and for just $2,000 you could obtain control of them for two songs.

MGM Grand

Magnificent views of the Las Vegas skyline…

Did you know?
The MGM Grand arena hosted arguably the biggest sporting event in the world…Pacquiao v Mayweather, a fight which was seen by millions across the globe and a purse of over $100,000,000. It isn’t just boxing that you’ll see at The MGM Grand, award-winning shows and artists perform there every week so you’ll have plenty to see during your stay in Vegas.

The Venetian

The most romantic city in the world…

Did you know?
The Venetian has 7000 suites under one roof making it the largest hotel in the world, YES the largest!

Luxor Hotel & Casino

Experience Ancient Egypt at the luxury Luxor Hotel!

Did you know?
The Luxor Hotel is home to one of Vegas’s most popular nightclubs…LAX. 26,000 square feet across 2 incredible floors. The perfect place for a Vegas night out.

Top Las Vegas Golf Courses

Golf courses in the Nevada state are mainly known for their desert surroundings with stunning backdrop views of the spring mountains. Vegas is known for its international influences and this is the same with its golf courses, where you can find a tropical oasis in Bali Hai and the spirit of Scotland in the Royal Links Club. If you don’t just want to be on the course, why not get some practice?

Here are some top golf course recommendations which will be some of your greatest golfing experiences.

Shadow Creek Golf Club

Designed by world famous architect Tom Fazio is seen as one of the best courses in the country. Travel in style from the MGM Grand in a private limousine, then upon arrival meet your very own personal caddie.

There are many myths and rumours about this course since opening in 1989. Originally exceptionally private and only playable as a personal guest of casino owner Steve Wynn, the course has now “opened” up slightly with limited tee-times available for those booking well in advance. The cost of building this course varies greatly but most agree it is in excess of $50,000,000, given the vision of Fazio and Wynn to turn what was fairly unforgiving Nevada desert into a lush parkland layout it is easy to see why it cost such a figure.

Wynn Las Vegas Golf Club

The most convenient golfing destination in the city, located just steps from the Wynn hotel lobby. This Championship Golf Course, is an 18 Hole Par 70 stretched to 7042 yards. The desert scenery and Vegas like water features make for some incredible views as you tee it up and walk up the fairways.

Rio Secco Golf Club

Seen as one of the best public golf courses in the city is only 25 minutes from the strip and is home to the Butch Harmon School of Golf. You may even see my lucky enough to see Vegas resident LPGA star Natalie Gulbis hitting balls on the range if not then you have the Casino’s….

Bali Hai Golf Club

Indonesia comes to Las Vegas, this tropical course is located right on strip, making for a stunning backdrop overlooking the lights of the major hotels and casinos, not forgetting the magnificent views of the spring mountains.

Royal Links Golf Club

The spirit of the Open Championship comes to Vegas at the Royal Links. Each hole is inspired by the British Isles, home to Open Championship courses, these include the road hole and hell bunker from the old course at St. Andrews. A British like experience including the castle style clubhouse and located only just 20 minutes from the strip. We’re not sure you can have a links course in the desert but they’ve certainly done a good job of it.

Cascata Golf Club

Cascata means ‘waterfall’ in Italian, so it comes as no surprise that the main feature is of course a high cascading waterfall. Cascada is also highly respected, ranked within the top 10 in Nevada.

Fancy a lesson from arguably the world’s best golf coach Butch Harmon?

Butch Harmon School of Golf – Home to one of the most well known golf coaches, has coached Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. Even if it’s for a 30 minute short game clinic or a 3 day intense programme, the school of golf can accommodate.

Lessons are limited, as you can imagine, but if they are booked in advance it is possible to secure a lesson from the man who not only created some of the world’s best swings but also provides Sky Sports viewers some great commentary during the golf coverage.

What to do off the Golf Course?

Simply put, there is much to do off the golf course when in Vegas. Whether you’re into music, fashion, shows, casinos, fine dining and more. Vegas is the place to be. Why not travel in Gondolas like you’re in Venice, enjoy the ‘O’ Water Show at the Bellagio Hotel or even shop till you drop at Caesar’s Palace.

Most will find their fun in the casinos but here are a few things that are out-of-this-world but very much at home in Las Vegas…

Fancy scuba diving with Sharks?
Well, I certainly wouldn’t want to do it but in Las Vegas you can. Head over to The Mandalay Bay hotel aquarium and swim with the fearless sand shark.

Get married
We’ve seen the movies…have a great time on a night out and get married…well you’ll be one of around 100,000 that take place in Vegas each year, that’s quite a number!

Take on an eating challenge
18 would probably be a more suitable number for a golfer but at Mandalay Bay you can take on their challenge of 24 sliders in 24 minutes. Given that I hit at least 18 sliders that miss the fairway a round I think I’m pretty much there already…

Has this article got you thinking about a golfing trip to Las Vegas?

Tenerife

Head West from the coast of Morocco and before you start breaching the vast blue of the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll come across a group of islands that have become universally popular holiday spots and for good reason too.

The Canary Islands boast a remarkable climate due to their southern location, so it’s no surprise that this Spanish outcrop is a favourite among golfing sun-seekers.

These sun-kissed islands are now within the scope of the major low-cost airlines, making the escape even more attractive and in Tenerife, golf holidaymakers will find the perfect combination of sun, sand and championship golf.

In fact, the majority of the best golf courses in the Canaries are found in Tenerife and with nine golf courses in all servicing visiting golfers throughout the year, golfers of all abilities are sure to find something to suit their eye.

Pick your dates and pack your bags; here are five reasons why Tenerife should be on your holiday hit-list this winter.

Fantastic Golf

Firstly (and perhaps most importantly for you and I), Tenerife is home to an inordinate amount of top-class golf courses. No less than nine layouts grace the island and every one of them boasts stunning views and year-round perfect playing conditions.

Golf Costa Adeje

The original 18 holes – now known as The Old Course and perhaps most memorable for its views of the coastline and La Gomera Island – opened for play in 1998 and have since been joined by an additional 9 holes called Los Lagos. Generous fairways are common throughout both courses with more emphasis placed on accurate approach play and the short game. Elevation changes and sweeping undulations, as well as a handful of gorges and lakes provide much of the challenge and with the courses in excellent condition for much of the year, putting is a joy.

Golf del Sur

With a good mixture of generous and tight fairways, the challenge off the tee at Costa del Sur is a dynamic one which must be carefully considered on each hole. Palm trees and prickly cacti add an interesting element to the challenge but it’s on the greens where your score will be made or broken. Slick and true, the greens reward solid strokes but tricky slopes make reading putts difficult. Being a costal course, Golf del Sur is also exposed to the wind which can add a real degree of difficulty on windy days and with black volcanic sand in the bunkers contrasting with the lush green fairways and greens, the course is visually striking and unlike other Spanish golf courses.

Amarilla Golf & Country Club

Amarilla Golf & Country Club sits perched atop the cliff tops which plunge spectacularly into the Atlantic Ocean, and with amazing views of Mount Teide, this is a truly memorable place to enjoy a round of golf. Amarilla isn’t the longest golf course by modern standards but, as with most Donald Steel layouts, placement is key, particularly when the water comes into play. There are no more spectacular places where this happens as on the famous par 3 5th where golfers are forced to carry their ball over the crashing waves in order to reach the green.

Golf Las Americas

Situated at the heart of Playa de Las Américas, one of the most famous holiday resorts in the south of the island, Golf Las Américas is a delightful resort course, where the luscious green is in perfect contrast to the woodland and mountain backdrop. Measuring 6,607 yards from the tips, the course can certainly test more talented golfers while forward tee positions make the course accessible for less experience players as well. Gentle undulations add to the character of the course and to a small degree the overall challenge, with numerous water hazards in play throughout the course, making good course management and accurate ball striking all important.

Buenavsita Golf

Situated in the North-Western corner of Tenerife, within view of the spectacular Teno mountain range, Buenavista offers one of the most picturesque golfing experiences going in Tenerife. Laid out on cliff tops overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Buenavista comprises of six par threes, six par fours and six par five holes which is not uncommon on Ballesteros designs. Generous fairways may be explained by Seve’s tendency to go a little off-piste with the driver but an intelligent design and a spectacular setting, with many holes inching their way right up to the cliff’s edge, add to the overall challenge. Buenavista might be a little off the beaten track when compared to other courses on the island but the drive to the north-west is enjoyably spectacular and well worth the effort.

Real Club de Golf de Tenerife

Real Club de Golf de Tenerife is the second oldest golf club in the Canaries, having been founded in 1932. Situated at 600m above sea level, the course offers amazing scenic backdrops including stunning views of a snow covered Mount Teide from a handful of holes. Tree-lined fairways place emphasis on accuracy from the tee on many holes and with dry stream beds and out of bounds lurking, course management is also important. As its name suggests, the history and heritage that surrounds this club make it rather exclusive and it is certainly the course of choice for Santa Cruz’s well-heeled.

Tecina Golf

Tecina is one of the most visually impressive courses in the Canary Islands, occupying a dramatic cliff top setting on the south side of the magical island of La Gomera, just a 40 minute ferry ride from Tenerife. Rather uniquely, the course plays almost continuously downhill, descending a steep slope from the 1st tee to the 18th green, which offers endless spectacular sea views that only a handful of courses in world golf can match. These inspiring vistas are ably backed up by an amazingly creative layout that will be enjoyed by all golfers, highlighted by a trio of signature holes. On the par 3 4th, you must play your tee shot over the Tapahuga ravine, while on the 10th, where the tee is a full 45 meters above the level of the green, and the 12th, approach shots are played to greens seemingly on the edge of the world.

Abama Golf

With views across to the island of La Gomera and out into the vast blue of the Atlantic Ocean, not to mention a masterful Dave Thomas (he of The Brabazon at The Belfry fame) design, Abama is one of the best courses to have been built in Europe in recent years and viewed by many as the best in the Canary Islands. 25,000 palm trees and no less than 22 lakes contribute much to the challenge here and with dramatic elevation changes as well as strategically placed bunkers that guard large putting surfaces also coming into play, golfers of all abilities will relish the challenge presented by Abama. A particular highlight comes in the form of the par 5 10th hole with plays from an elevated tee downhill, snaking past lakes and waterfalls on the left and bunkers on the right, to a beautifully framed green. Like the rest of the course, this gem of a hole will not be quickly forgotten.

Breathtaking Scenery

Tenerife doesn’t just offer quality golf; it offers the type of golf where you’ll often stop and wonder whether you should be playing the course or painting it. Needless to say, make sure your camera battery is charged! Among the highlights on offer include the Amarilla Golf & Country Club, which peers out across cliff tops towards the Atlantic Ocean and provides you with amazing views of Mount Teide. Or for arguably the most visually impressive golf experience in the area, take the 40 minute ferry ride to Tecina Golf – located on the south side of the nearby La Gomera island. Here you’ll be constantly greeted by the most amazing ocean panoramas in what is a truly unbelievable golfing experience.

Vibrant Nightlife

When it comes to moonlight action, Tenerife has something to suit all moods and tastes. The buzzing clubbing scene attracts partygoers from across the globe, many to watch international DJs drop bass heavy anthems long into the morning. Most of the wild party action occurs in the south of the island around the lively resort of Playa de las Americas. Here you’ll find countless late night bars and top nightclubs, many of which offer cheap drink promotions. If you’re after something at a bit slower pace, do as the locals do and head to one of the laid-back open bars. Here you can enjoy a more authentic Spanish experience, with a few relaxed drinks and some tapas while listening to local music.

TRAMPS

For a guaranteed wild night, head to Tramps – the most popular nightclub in the whole of the Canaries. Seasoned clubbers travel from all corners of Europe to party in an electric atmosphere supplied by big-name DJs. Voted the best club outside of Ibiza by Radio One in 2007 and 2008. Needless to say that if you choose to visit Tramps, a late tee time the following day is strongly advised!

PAPAGAYO BEACH CLUB

If you’re after something a little classier than your average Wetherspoons, the Papagayo Beach Club comes highly recommended. Grab an upstairs suite and sip expertly-made cocktails while taking in the stunning sea views, or sample top-class cuisine as you watch the sun’s rays disappear over the horizon. On the weekends, DJs supply techno and house beats to a packed dance floor.

O’NEILL’S BAR

Situated on the hugely popular Veronicas Strip, O’Neill’s Bar is arguably the most happening bar in all of Las Americas. Step through the doors and you’ll find a huge party-centric atmosphere, with popular DJs, cage dancers, “shot girls”, drinking games, and if you pick the right night, perhaps even a Wet T-shirt competition. And to top it all off, you can expect reasonable drinks prices. All the ingredients for a (perhaps not so) memorable night out!

LINEKER’S BAR

Famed for its links to former England footballer Gary (it’s owned by his brother), Lineker’s is the most well-known bar in Playa de las Americas. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a few pints and catch the football, as the 26 screens situated around the bar create a real stadium-like atmosphere. The bar staff are known to be quite generous with their pouring of spirits… so be prepared that the evening may quickly escalate.

FARO CHILL ART BAR

A seriously cool bar, perched in a seriously cool spot overlooking the ocean. Faro Chill Art attracts a big crowd of mixed with both locals and tourists, as revelers come to ‘chill’ and drink beverages by sunset then dance the night away on one of the three chic terraces. Billed as providing “some of the best music in the south”, this a must check-out spot for visitors to Costa Adeje.

Perfect Golfing Climate

If there is one thing that living in the UK does for a golfer, it’s make you appreciate those rare few months when you can leave the waterproofs at home and work on the classic golfer’s tan. But I doubt the word “waterproof” even exists in the vocabulary of a Tenerife native; not when the average daily temperature hovers between 17-27°C year-round and rainy days per month can be counted on one hand!

This remarkable climate can be attributed to Tenerife’s southern location, and unlike some of its mainland neighbours, comfortable humidity levels make for ideal golfing conditions regardless of the season.

Stunning Beaches

Tenerife is home to a mix of amazing natural and man-made beaches, from pure volcanic rock to golden sands imported from the Sahara! Sun-seekers flock to the island’s shores to wade in the warm tranquil waters of the Atlantic. El Médano, “the sand dune” in Spanish, is one of the longest and most beautiful natural beaches on the island. Strong winds make it ideal for a variety of water sports, including wind-surfing, jet-skiing and kite-surfing. The pristine beaches of Costa Adeje and Playa del Duque are among the best on the island, while the six beaches scattered around Playa de Las Americas are firm favourites among young British travellers. Tenerife offers a myriad of other sandy coves and beaches, many of which are almost deserted, giving you the feel of your own island paradise!
